About the Airport
Cheyenne Regional Airport

Cheyenne Regional Airport (IATA: CYS, ICAO: KCYS), is conveniently located in the center of the City of Cheyenne, WY, and only 2 miles north from downtown Cheyenne. The Airport was born the summer of 1920 when the United States Postal Service announced Cheyenne as one of the stops on their airmail route. Cheyenne eventually became the first major maintenance hub of United Airlines, a significant B-17 modification center During World War II, and served as the training center for all of United Airlines Flight Attendants until the late 1950s. With the advent of pressurized and more fuel-efficient aircraft, Cheyenne’ Airport’s commercial service dwindled and eventually became a spoke in the hub of Denver’s international airports. Today, Cheyenne is home to Great Lakes Airlines, Wyoming Air National Guard, and the Wyoming Department of Transportation, Aeronautics Division and their planes. Cheyenne still maintains an Air Traffic Control Tower and Radar facility, and all weather capability. We have two runways, ranging from 6,690 feet to 9,270 feet in length, and serve as one of Denver International Airport’s primary diversion Airports.
In 2004, Cheyenne Airport changed its name to Cheyenne Regional Airport, Jerry Olson Field in remembrance of the beloved former Airport Manager Jerry Olson, A.A.E., whom served the Airport for 13 years prior to passing away after a courageous year long battle with cancer. Jerry earned a reputation of making the impossible possible throughout his career, and in recognition of his contributions to both the aviation industry and the City of Cheyenne, the Cheyenne Airport Board voted unanimously to change the name of the airfield to Jerry Olson Field on June 18th, 2004. Jerry’s vision and leadership helped to transform the Cheyenne Airport from a simple aviation activity center into a thriving business enterprise.
Today Cheyenne Regional Airport is used regularly by a variety of flight operations including regularly scheduled passenger service to and from Denver, cargo, military support, and support for general aviation flying activities such a flight schools, corporate, and private aircraft. The economic impact of the Airport to the local community is estimated at nearly $48.7 million in wages paid and $197.4 million in area business sales can be attributed to the airport and its tenants annually.
